Sherwood L. Bryan, 80, passed away on his 59th wedding anniversary, on June 16, 2022, at 10:30 PM in Houston, TX from a blood infection which led to other health complications.
Sherwood was born on September 1, 1941, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Charles LeRoy Bryan and Ida Inez McIntire Bryan.
Sherwood graduated from Neodesha High School in the Class of 1960. Following graduation, he served with the Kansas National Guard and U.S. Army from 1960 to 1966 as a Military Policeman. He acquired an honorable discharge in 1966.
He married Oma Lenora Janette Morris in June of 1963 and settled in Independence, KS, where they would later raise a son, Chadrick Bryan.
Sherwood earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1970 from Independence Community Junior College. Sherwood later took evening classes at Kansas State College of Pittsburg and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1973. He drove each evening from his machinist job in Coffeyville to Pittsburg for his classes in a VW bug (which he wore out). Several years later, he continued his higher education by taking summer classes at Pittsburg State University, earning a Master of Science in 1984.
Sherwood taught woodshop and other industrial arts classes at various schools in Kansas, Texas, and Missouri over a span of 25 years. For a short time between his machinist job and first teaching position, Sherwood worked for a small construction company and helped to build several houses around Independence, KS.
His hobbies included woodworking (of course), fishing and model railroading. He especially enjoyed fishing and running model trains with his son and grandson.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving, in addition to his wife Janette, is his son Chadrick Bryan (and wife Dianna) of Houston, TX, one grandchild Luke Bryan of Houston, TX, one brother Gareth Bryan (and wife Carol) of Williamsport, MD, and one niece.
Per request and desire of Sherwood, there is no funeral service or viewing. A grave side memorial will be held at 10:00 AM Friday June 24th, 2022, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, KS. A time of remembrance will be held following the grave side memorial from noon to 3:00 PM on Friday June 24th, 2022, at Big Cheese Pizza (a family favorite for gatherings) in the party room at 103 E Main Street in Independence, KS, with pizza and drinks available at reduced rates. We are thankful to celebrate his life as a believer in Jesus Christ, knowing that to be absent here, is to be fully present with the Lord. 1Thessalonians 4:14, 17b: 14For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 17 …And so we will be with the LORD forever.
