Betty Joan Lemon

Betty Joan Lemon, age 84, of Independence, Kansas, died Monday, June 9, 2025, at the Integris Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Betty was born on March 3, 1941, in Independence, Kansas to Charles Garoutte and Roena (Carr) Garoutte. She graduated from Independence High School in 1959.

She met Charles Lemon in September in 1960 and was married on November 17, 1960, in Independence, Kansas. They made their home in Independence, Kansas where they raised their four daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 25, 1998.

Betty was employed by ARCO in Independence as a draftsperson for many years before retiring.

Betty was a member of the Independence Friends Church.

Betty was also a member of the Red Hat Society, the Sassy Sisters, and a weekly bawdy poker night with her friends. She enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, painting, gardening, cake decorating, and reading mystery and spy novels.

She is survived by four daughters, Callista Taylor of Tuttle, Oklahoma, Stacey Green and husband Delbert of Neosho, Missouri, Tina Folk and husband Kevin of Cherryvale, Kansas, Penny Harris and husband Brian of Bolton, Kansas; 31 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, Rosalee, Blanche (Marie), Peggy and Rebecca (Becky).

Viewing will take place at Webb and Rodrick Chapel in Independence, Kansas on Thursday June 19, 2025, from 5:00-7:00pm.

The memorial service will take place on June 21, 2025, at New Life Baptist Church, 2515 S 10th St., Independence, Kansas at 3:00pm, with Pastor John Penrose and wife Betty Jean officiating. There will be a meal following the service.
