Betty Jean McMillen was born on October 20, 1923 to William V. and Clara Grace (Hill) Linville in Independence, Kansas. She attended the local schools graduating from Independence High School in 1941 and Independence Junior College in 1943. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone during World War II.

She was united in marriage to Sgt. James T. McMillen on May 19, 1945 in Waco, Texas. They celebrated 61 years of love and marriage before J.T. passed away on June 30, 2006.

She was a devoted mother to her three children, Shirley, Tom, and Bill. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and a Den Mother. She was active in PTA and served as Council President. She received a life PTA membership at Lincoln School.

Betty was a former member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, AARP, the Cosmopolitan and Home Arts Federated Clubs, and EWA.

Betty joined First Christian Church in 1932 and had served as a deaconess, Sunday School teacher, Christian Women's Fellowship officer, and active member of the Future Planners Class.

After making her home in Independence for the better part of 88 years, Betty moved to Illinois to be closer to her daughter . It was in Glen Carbon where she spent her last years and enjoyed visits from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who traveled from Arizona, California, and Virginia to spend time with her. She died surrounded in love on December 2, 2016.

She is preceded in death by her husband, J.T. McMillen; parents,William and Clara Grace Linville; sister, Maurine Linville; brother, Walter Linville; and son-in-law, Don Strasburg.

Betty is survived by her three children Shirley Strasburg of Edwardsville, Illinois, Tom and Nancy McMillen of San Juan Capistrano, California, and Bill and Michelle McMillen of Bullhead City, Arizona; three grandchildren Jennifer Brumback, Kelly McMillen and Dana Paz; and five great grandchildren, Ryan, Maggie, Nolan, Evan and Eva.

The family will be greeting friends at Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 7, from 5:00-7:00. Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church in Independence, Kansas on Thursday, December 8th, at 10:00 followed by a graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery.
