Charles Smart

August 25, 1932 — February 7, 2016

Charles W. Smart age 83 was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 7, 2016. Cremation has taken place and Services will be held at The First Christian Church under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory at 11:00 a.m., on February 11, 2016. Friends are invited to sign the register on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 9:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. The family suggests memorials to the Independence Lion's Club or the First Christian Church and may be let with the chapel.
Charles was born August 25, 1932 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Thompson A. and Myrl Smart. He attended and graduated from Cherryvale High School. After proudly serving for two years in the United States Army, he continued his education at Pittsburg State University, graduating with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education. Charles began his long career in education teaching high school in Salem, Missouri. He and his family then moved to Independence, Kansas where he both taught and served as an administrator for U.S.D. 445 before retiring from Independence Community College.
On June 6, 1953 Charles married the love of his life Connie Gilliland, she survives at the home. In addition, left to honor his memory are two Sons David and wife Delia Smart of Olathe, Kansas and Andy and wife Alicia Smart of Coffeyville, Kansas, a sister Sharon and husband Bill Reynolds of Independence, Kansas and a brother John and wife Susan Smart also of Independence, Kansas. He loved children and was blessed with six grandchildren, Shawn Smart, Magee and husband Jeff, Adam and Shannon Smart, Tom and Missy Smart, Torey Smart DeWitt and husband Luke, Michael Smart and Cooper Smart. He also loved his five great-grandchildren. Olivia, Bryce, Addie, Hudson and Carson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He loved everything outdoors, gardening, hiking, and especially fishing. Spending time with his family in pursuit of outdoor activities made them all better.
Arrangements entrusted to Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory.
