Elmer Kenneth Fienen

April 25, 1937 — July 4, 2025

Independence, Kansas

Elmer Kenneth Fienen was born April 25, 1937, in Independence, Kansas to John and Marie Fienen and was the youngest of five boys. He grew up in a Lutheran family with a strong sense of loyalty and love towards family and friends alike. He attended school in Independence at Zion Lutheran School and graduated from Independence High School.

On December 22, 1957, he married the love of his life Carol “Judy” Sherwood who preceded him in death on April 22, 2015. Upon getting married, they packed up and moved to Olympia, Washington, where he was serving in the United States Army at Fort Lewis. He served his country from 1956 through 1958. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge, he moved back to Independence where he began a career of “serving the public”. His kind demeanor and eternal patience would make him a friend for life. Shoveling snow down neighborhood sidewalks endeared him to even strangers.

Traveling was another love he and his wife regularly made time for. Camping, fishing, cruising, and motorcycling with family and cousins were frequent indulgences.

His favorite story to tell family members was the time as a young boy working in the concession stand at Shulthis Stadium. He got to play catch with Mickey Mantle during pre-game warm-ups.

His hands were God’s tools. He could fix anything from a watch, rebuild a car engine, or build an addition to a home. His sanctuary was his shop where he could sit for hours shaving walnut shells into thin slices and then create works of art.

As a young man, he owned his dream car, a 1940 Ford Coupe. Ironically, one his last “big” purchases was a 1940 Ford Coupe. He was the epitome of husband, father, and grandfather and the consummate father-figure to all relatives who loved him dearly. He will be sorely missed by all who were impacted by his kindness and tranquility.

Elmer is preceded in death by his parents John P. Feinen and Maria Fienen (Klintworth), brothers John Fienen, Norman Fienen, Richard Fienen, and Marvin Fienen.

He is survived by his sons Kenneth Fienen (Jamie), Stephen Fienen (Therea), Phillip (Wendy), and daughter Teresa Benbow (Tim) residing in Roswell, Georgia.

Funeral services will be 10:00am, Friday, July 18, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, Kansas.
