Kathleen O'Brien Sewell passed away suddenly in her home on Friday September 30, 2016.
Kathy was born in Kansas City, MO on August 14, 1943. While her father served in World War II, she and her mother lived in Kansas City until after the war. They moved to Independence, KS. Kathy attended Riley Elementary School, Independence Junior High School, and Independence High School. She graduated from Independence High School in 1961.
Kathy attended the University of Kansas. She joined the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1965 with a degree in education. In 1965 to 1967, she lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico teaching elementary school.
Kathy started dating Albert Sewell in 1965. They married on June 28, 1969 two weeks after Albert served a tour of duty in Vietnam. They settled in Kansas City, Kansas. Kathy taught elementary school. In 1970, Kathy gave birth to her daughter, Leslie.
In 1971, Kathy and Albert moved to Independence, Kansas to be closer to family. Kathy became a homemaker. Kathy gave birth to her son, Kent. In 1974, she gave birth to her daughter, Alison.
Kathy enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart. She loved to laugh and joke. She enjoyed attending auctions, doing needlepoint, knitting, gardening, and seeing her friends. Her family and friends will miss visiting and laughing with her.
Kathy was preceded in death by her father, John F. O'Brien; her mother, Doris M. O'Brien; and her brother, David L. O'Brien. Kathy is survived by her husband, Albert K. Sewell; her daughter Leslie A. Bauguess; her son, Aaron K. Sewell; and her daughter, Alison I. Andrews. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Aaron K. Sewell, Sadie P. Sewell, Kathryn M. Bauguess, Ethan J. Bauguess, Jordan C. Ashford, and Morgan N. Andrews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday October 6, 2016 at the Episcopal Church in Independence, KS. A reception will immediately follow after the service time. Memorials can be made in Kathy's name to the Episcopal Church and left with The Webb Rodrick Chapel and Crematory of Independence, KS.
