Kathryn Barton

February 19, 1926 — January 21, 2020

Kathryn passed away on January 21, 2020; she was born Kathryn Louise Bailey on

February 19, 1926 to Amy Taylor Bailey and Harold W. Bailey. They lived in Nevada, MO at the time, then moved to Independence in 1930. She spent her childhood between Independence and Tulsa, OK; she once expressed the wish to always live in Independence to be close to her family.



She met Jerry D. Barton at Tulsa Central High where they graduated and married. She came back to Independence when he entered the Navy. When he returned, he went to Independence Junior College, and then he attended Washburn University. Ready to enter the working world, he then proceeded to move her from Oswego, KS to Frankfort, IN, Chicago, IL, Monticello, IL, and Pasadena, CA. She grumbled about that a lot. When Jerry retired, they moved back to Independence in 1983.



Kathryn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deaconess, Trustee, and Presbyterian Women. She was on the Board of the Independence Historical Museum, Friends of the Library, 50 years in the DAR, PEO, life member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, AWOL and ForPAZ.



She was preceded in death by: J. D. Barton (husband), Amy and Harold W. Bailey (parents), Dr. and Mrs. Frank C. Taylor (grandparents), all of Independence. Also: Harold Baily (brother) of Texas, and Jerry D. Barton (son) of Indiana.



Survivors include: daughter Karyl Gil and David Gil of Oklahoma; three granddaughters: Amy and Craig Whonsetler, Brooke and Tim Waikel all of Indiana, Jeri and Perry Fatheree of Oklahoma; grandson: Mark Barton; Great Grandchildren: Eric Deduch, David and Keira Waikel of Indiana.
