Cherryvale, Kansas

Marie Lois (Wolf) Cotterill

(August 13th 1939-July 22nd 2023)

Marie L. Cotterill, 83, of Cherryvale, Kansas peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 22nd, 2023. Marie made her introduction into this world on August 13th, 1939, alongside her identical twin sister, Mary (Wolf) Hershberger. She was born at home in Bolton, Kansas to her parents, Louis Wolf and Vera (Troutman) Wolf.

Marie graduated from Independence High School and married her high school sweetheart Gary Cotterill. They resided north of Independence before moving to the west of Cherryvale for the remainder of their 61 years of marriage. They raised three children, son Paul, and twins Rex and Regina, whom she loved with all of her heart. After her children were raised, she traveled with Gary to many places such as China, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Brazil, Germany, and three times to Ecuador on mission trips with the Nazarene Church.

Marie played many roles in her full and active life. Right out of high school, she began working as a telephone operator and supervisor at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. She would work there for 22 years before transitioning to a secretary role for the Rural Water District #12. With her sharp mind, she became an accounting clerk at Sunflower Pipe & Supply, and later a bookkeeper and payroll clerk at the Fredonia Livestock Sale Co. She would retire as an administrative secretary at the First State Bank. Arguably, her most consuming role was in ranch management at the Cotterill Ranch.

Marie had a positive and cheerful spirit about her. She was witty and keen. If you were so lucky to have known Marie, you know that she could make anyone laugh and smile. Marie loved to make ceramics, crochet, and knit, and she loved her time as a Sunday School teacher. She was active in her church and served her community as an election board member. Marie was devout in her faith and loved her family tremendously. Gary was the love of her life, and she loved the company of her children and grandchildren. She survived stage four ovarian cancer in 2001 and breast cancer in 2012. Despite the difficult cards that she was dealt, she made every day a good day. Even as her memory waned, her positive personality remained, though her humor became more honest.

Marie is survived by her son Dr. Paul Cotterill of Cherryvale, KS; daughter Regina (Cotterill) Proctor and husband Alan Proctor of Owasso, OK; son Rex Cotterill and wife Morgan Smalley-Cotterill of Cherryvale, KS; granddaughter Meredith (Proctor) Keen and husband Brockton Keen of Decatur, GA; grandson Tyler Cotterill of Cherryvale, KS; grandson Jacob Proctor of Owasso, OK; sister-in-law Evelyn (Cotterill) Kennedy and husband Howard Kennedy of Bartlesville, OK; brother-in-law Joe Hershberger of Newton, KS; niece Marilyn Wooderson of Newton, KS; nephew Michael Kennedy and wife April Kennedy of Bartlesville, OK; niece Heather (Kennedy) Smelser and husband Rob of Bartlesville, OK; and nephew Shawn Kennedy of Bartlesville, OK.

Marie is preceded by death by husband Gary Cotterill; her parents, Louis and Vera (Troutman) Wolf; sister Sadie (Wolf) Schwatken; sister Mary (Wolf) Hershberger; brother-in-law David Cotterill and wife Carolyn; and niece Gwendolyn (Synder) Moore.
