Melvena C. Hazen
Melvena Caroline Hazen, age 100, Independence passed away at her home in Eagle Estates, Sunday January 1, 2017.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 3rd from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory.
Grave side services will be held Wednesday January 4th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas, with Rev Harold Groth officiating and under the directions of Webb & Rodrick Chapel.
Memorials remembrances are suggest to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or the Independence Public Library.
Melvena was born in La Kemp, Oklahoma , June 3, 1916, which was soon moved across the state line to be near the new railroad and the new town was named Booker, Texas. She was the daughter of Olive B. (Ollie) and Beulah (Boyer) Hummer. She graduated from Booker High School in 1936.
On December 12, 1942, in Dalhart, Texas she was united in marriage to Ed Bly. They had four children. They were divorced in 1965.
She married Ernest W. Hazen of Neodesha, Kansas June 24, 1967 and they lived in rural Neodesha until moving to Independence in July 1984.
Survivors of Melvena include three daughters; Lecieta (Bly) Taylor and husband, Theron, of Catoosa, OK. Sue (Bly) Youngberg and husband, E. Dale (Butch), of Bartlesville, OK. Teresa Ilene (Bly) Bell and husband, Mike, of Independence, KS. Daughter-in-law Cheryl (Chamber) Bly of Neodesha, KS.
Nine grandchildren, Jay Ann (Taylor/Gheen) Maddux and husband Gene, Timothy Taylor and wife Pamela, Shelly (Bly) Hulet and husband Scott, Jennifer (Youngberg) Beal and husband J.J. , Ryan Youngberg and wife Natalie, Toby Youngberg, Victoria (Youngberg) Schapansky and husband Cody, Mallary Youngberg, Brittany (Bell) Barrett and husband Austin.
Ten great-grandchildren, Matthew, Madison, Anniston, Ryder, Joshua, Angelia, Milan, Alex, Zoe, and Bentley.
Melvena was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Hazen, and Ed Bly; a son, Marcel Bly; one great-great grandson, Blake Gheen; parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Pallbearers will be: Tim Taylor, Ryan Youngberg, Toby Youngberg, Matthew Gheen, J. J. Beal, and Scott Hulet.
