Phyllis E. Newkirk, 83, Elk City, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Montgomery Place in Independence, Kansas. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017 at Elk City United Methodist Church with Reverend Terry Hatfield officiating with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kansas. The family will greet visitors on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. Memorials in memory of Phyllis may be made to Louisburg Township Rural Fire Department or The Elk City United Methodist Church and may be left with the Chapel.
Phyllis was born July 21, 1933 in Elk City, Kansas to Jewell and Bernice (Huffman) Couch she attended and graduated from Elk City, Kansas schools. Phyllis married Dyarl Newkirk on December 29, 1952 in Elk City, Kansas. The couple made their home in Elk City where Phyllis was a homemaker. Phyllis is a lifelong member of the Elk City United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women's Group, Commercial Club, a member of the Elk City Old Settlers Day Fair Board, Louisburg Township Rural Fire Department, and was later employed as the Elk City, Kansas Bookkeeper and by Think Slim in Parsons, Kansas.
Phyllis will be remembered for her pumpkin decorated sugar cookies she handed out on Halloween night, her cinnamon rolls and for giving the best hugs.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; and one infant sister, Ruth Ann Couch. Survivors include: one son, Dwayne Newkirk and partner, Paul Marquardt, of Parsons, Kansas; two daughters, Pam and husband, Gaylan Hamilton, Elk City, Kansas; Cheryl Kahler, Independence, Kansas; one brother, Joe and wife, Myrna Couch, Elk City, Kansas; five grandchildren, Chad and wife, Amber Kahler, Elk City, Kansas; Michael and wife, Heather Sullivan, Lamont, Colorado; Chris Hamilton and Leona Truitt, Elk City, Kansas; Jennifer and husband, Brandon Giles, Elk City, Kansas; Caitria and husband, Gordon Gartner, Independence, Kansas; three great grandchildren, Corbin Beckenholdt, Megan Kahler, and Reece Giles.
