Russell Dean Landwehr, 67, of Independence, KS passed away suddenly on Monday August 12, 2019 at Labette Health Independence Healthcare Center, Independence, KS. Reciting of the Holy Rosary will be at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory 306 W. Main St, Independence, KS with the family greeting visitors from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory with burial to follow in St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery in Independence, KS.
Russell was born March 10, 1952 in Fredonia, KS to Leo and Roberta (Van Houden) Landwehr. He attended Fredonia, KS Schools and graduated from Independence High School. Following high school Russell attend Independence Community College. He was employed in retail and construction. However, his career was as a railroad man, working for both the Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads. He retired as a Track Foreman in 2014.
Russell married Cheryl Faler on December 26, 1976 in Independence, KS. Russell was a lifelong resident of the area and a long time member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. An avid outdoorsman, Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and wild harvesting. He also enjoyed traveling, raising cattle, and the culinary arts. Russell will be remembered as a husband, father, and grandfather extraordinaire.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, and father-in-law Capt. Dale Faler. Those left to cherish his memory include Cheryl, his wife of forty-two years, three children, Theron Landwehr, and Christopher (Madeline) Landwehr, of Lawrence, KS, one daughter Valerie (Michael) Bonnett, Hollywood, FL, six grandchildren, Brock, Breckyn, Beckett, Bronson, Alaric and Livinia.
He is survived by five sisters, June Passauer, Neodesha, KS, Elaine (Frank) Chandler, Parsons, KS, Janet Landwehr, Carolyn (Bob) Leiker, Bonnie (Ron) Wood, and mother-in law Jean Faler, all of Independence, KS.
