Sydney H. Andrews, age 88, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Independence with cremation to follow. Friends may register on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from 12 noon - 7:00 p.m., with the family receiving guest from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church Open Arms Dining, P.O. Box 315 Independence, KS, 67301, VFW Post # 1186 P.O. Box 535 Independence, KS, 67301 or the Masonic Lodge 2000 W. Laurel Independence, KS, 67301 and may be left with the chapel. Masonic Rites will be provided by Masonic Lodge No. 107 and Military honors provided by V.F.W. Post #1186.
Sydney graduated from Boulder High School in 1944. He received his Eagle Scout Award before his induction into the US Navy. He was a plank owner of the USS MASSEY DD778. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theatre Medal and the two battles Stars Victory Medals. Following his discharge from the Navy, Sydney married Wilma Tucker on June 9, 1957 in Independence, Kansas in a double wedding ceremony with Dolly tucker and the late Phillip W. Briggs. The couple made their home in Colorado where Sydney attended and graduated from Western State College, BA, MA and University of Denver, PHD. He was a charter member of the National Ski Patrol Association. His professional career spanned teaching and coaching at the elementary, high school, college and graduate school levels in Colorado, North Carolina, and Oregon. He served on the President's Council of Physical Fitness and held offices in professional organizations at all levels. He served on high school accreditation teams in North Carolina and Oregon. After retirement from teaching, he was involved with building and maintaining golf courses in Arizona before moving to Independence.
Sydney is also a member of BPOE Lodge 527, Al Kader Shrine, Knight Templer, Cryptic and Royal Arch Masons of Oregon. He was active in the VFW #1186 and ICC Boosters Club. A member of the First Christian Church serving as a deacon to the Kings Sunday school class, and an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. Sydney was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald A. and Winnifred (Ready) Andrews. Those left to treasure his memory include his wife of 58 years Wilma, of the home, one daughter Delaney Andrews, Burbank, CA, two grandsons, Andrew and Brandon Osborne, Burbank , CA, Arrangements Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory
