Virginia Sack

September 25, 1919 — February 16, 2018

Virginia Olive Sack, age 98, of Independence, KS, passed away February 16, 2018 at Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas.

Virginia was born to Earl and Ethel (DeShurley) Pitts in rural Montgomery County, on September 25, 1919. After her mother's death in 1920, she was raised by her grandparents, Charles & Nettie Pitts. She attended Quaker & White Post schools and graduated from Independence High School in 1937 and Independence Junior College in 1939.

After college, Virginia worked in the Kansas Department of Education office in Topeka, KS for two years. She also worked at KGE, FRAM, James Mfg, Farmers Home Administration, and retired in 1980 from the Social Security Administration all in Independence.

On June 4, 1941, she married the love of her life, Albert Sack. The couple made their home in Independence and they were blessed with three sons and one daughter.

Through the years, Virginia was a very active member/leader of many local organizations including Community Chest, 4-H Clubs, Phi Beta Kappa sorority, United Way, NARFE, First United Methodist Church, and UMW. When Albert was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease, she founded the Independence Chapter of the Parkinson Support Group in Independence in the 1980's.

In her "leisure" time, she was a caregiver of many family member. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and especially watching their sporting and theatre programs. She and Albert enjoyed many road trips after their retirement in their camper/vans.

Left to honor her memory are her son, Steven (Linda) Sack of Neodesha, KS and daughter Toni (Dave) Thomas of Coffeyville, KS, daughter-in-law's, Becky Sack of Springdale, AR and Judi Sack of Dickinson, TX; grandchildren, Jason Sack, April Martin, Lisa Blok, Ryan Sack, Michael Hegwald, Andrew (Sarah) Hegwald, Christopher Hegwald, Jesse Gonzalez, Seth (Dana) Thomas, and Sarah (Tommy) Thompson, 15 great-grandchildren and special nieces, Dorothy Elliott and Mary (Mike) Thomas and nephew, John (Barbara) Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, two sons, David Sack and Michael Sack in 2015, and sister, Helen Pitts Elliott in 1975.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Independence, KS with Seth Thomas officiating. A visitation will be held at 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 21 with the family receiving guest from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the chapel.
