Wanda J. Gettler

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Wanda Gettler, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Independence, Kansas, community, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 24, 2025, at her home of over 44 years. She was 65 years old. She was surrounded by love—both near and far—and the enduring peace of her faith.

Born on April 29, 1959, Wanda was a light to all who knew her. Her warmth, kindness, generous hugs, and ever-present smile touched countless lives. She made everyone feel seen, heard, and deeply valued.

For 47 years, Wanda operated an in-home daycare, helping to raise generations of children. Affectionately known as “Miss Wanda,” she became a second mother to many and a steadfast source of comfort and support to countless families. Later in life, she also worked part-time at the front counter at Casey’s General Store, where both co-workers and customers adored her.

Wanda’s greatest joy was her family: her husband of 47 years, Gary Gettler; her sons, Toby Gettler and Jeffrey Gettler; and her precious granddaughters, Tatum and Tinley Gettler. She found purpose and daily joy in loving and caring for them, passing down the values of compassion, faith, humility, and unwavering love.

A lifelong member of First Christian Church, Wanda’s faith was her foundation. It sustained her through life’s challenges and gave her strength and peace, especially in her final weeks. Her days were filled with light, laughter, and unforgettable memories, with her beloved Gary, Toby, and Jeffrey by her side, ensuring she was as comfortable and cared for as possible.

Wanda is lovingly remembered by her husband, Gary; her sons, Toby (Stephanie) and Jeffrey (Joslyn Kusiak); her granddaughters, Tatum and Tinley Gettler; her mother, Estella Lister; and her sisters, Marcia McAlerney (Martin) and Janice Venable. She was preceded in death by her father, Norman Lister.

To know Wanda was to be loved by her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was, and will always be, a bright star whose light can never be dimmed.

In the words of those who loved her: “She was truly an angel on earth.” “The best Christian and prayer warrior I know.” “A second mom.” “The kindest, wisest, and most loving human being.”

Her faith was strong. Her love was fierce. And her life was beautiful.
