Wesley Allen McPheeters, age 73 of Independence, KS, passed away on May 23, 2021 at his home.
Wesley was born in Oklahoma City, OK on April 30, 1948 to Vernon L. and Dorothea M. (Hall) McPheeters. The family lived in Chelsea, OK before moving to Independence, KS. Wesley attended local schools, including a one room country school house, and graduated from Independence High School. To avoid being drafted, Wesley voluntarily enlisted in the United States Navy on April 14, 1969, where he proudly served during the Vietnam War and in the Bahamas, until his honorable discharge on January 14, 1973. Wesley attended Bethany College and graduated from Independence Community College. He was united in marriage to Mary (Meg) Glass on July 17, 1971 at the Independence Church of the Nazarene. The couple was blessed with a son and a daughter. He worked various jobs in Independence before becoming a firefighter for over 17 years. He also did maintenance for both Mercy Hospital and Coffeyville Regional Medical Center before retiring. Wesley was a member of the Tyro Christian Church. He had a beautiful voice and was always singing. He enjoyed buying and trading knives and guns and could almost daily be found at one of the local Pawn Shops, drinking coffee and telling stories. He also enjoyed fishing at the State Lake, even though he rarely caught anything. He was a prankster and absolutely loved teasing the nurses that he worked with and being silly. He was known to his granddaughters as Papa Bear and they will remember most the silly songs that he sang to them and the stories he told.
Those left to cherish his memories are, his wife Meg of the home, his daughter Kathy Thompson and her husband Bryan, granddaughters Emily and Molly Thompson. A brother Dan McPheeters, brother-in-law Max Glass & wife, and sisters-in-law Carol McPheeters, Niki McPheeters, Rhea McPheeters, Norma Davis, Jean White, and several nieces and nephews. Wesley also cherished his friendship with Boo Seifert & family and considered them his own.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, his son Robert W. (Bobby) McPheeters, brothers Vernon Leroy McPheeters, Jr. and Tom McPheeters and one sister Janet Driskill.
