Mike married Jackie Lynn Vaughn on July 16th, 1971 in Lafontaine, Ks, were they made their home. They were blessed with 2 sons, Greg, and Brian. In 1987, the family moved to Thayer. The couple later divorced.

Mike worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, later BNSF for 38 years, retiring in 2010.

Mike had a love of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and had a dune buggy or a motorcycle most of his life. He enjoyed ATV's, and going for trail rides, on those, or on horseback. Mike in years past had been a member of ABATE Dist#3, a member of the Eagles Club, and a Thayer Homecoming Booster. He enjoyed socializing with friends, getting together at Neewollah for Class of 69'reunions, attending the Winfield Bluegrass Festival, camping, scouting flea markets, and up until his passing, maintained a respective cattle operation.

Mike's greatest accomplishment, and happiest moments were spent with his family, most especially with his 5 grandchildren who all called Him Papa. He was always up for watching cartoons and westerns with them. He rode many bleachers, attended many plays and concerts, and very much enjoyed going to any school activity he could. He lived to see all three of his grandsons graduate from High School, and that made him extremely proud. His granddaughters recall many times of going with Papa to feed hay, bottle feed calves, and doing chores with Papa. He enjoyed getting the house ready, and always had his family at home for Christmas.
